Softchrome Custom-Tinted Lenses -Vs- Off-The-Shelf Colored Lenses
By Kelly Peck, CPO
When asked by practitioners,
What can custom, in-office tinting do for us that those off-the-shelf
colored lenses can’t?” My answer is simple. Optometric
practices do not make their majority of money on contact lenses. They
are a convenience for our patients. Many patients are now taking their
prescription to 1-800-Contacts or to another discount store. Custom
tinting is a great way to assure that your patients will not walk
out with their prescription but will purchase their contacts from
your practice, and added revenue will be provided from tinting.
First, let’s
look at Softchrome® tinted lenses vs. Acuvue, Freshlook or other
enhancing tints. These lenses are fantastic in their own right,
but what about the patient that wears toric, bi-focal or progressive
lenses? Using the Softchrome® In-Office Tinting System, you
are able to say, I know it hasn’t been possible in the past,
but now WE are able to CUSTOM tint your lenses for you!”
Another benefit of custom tinting is that a patient does not have to buy an entire box of one color. You can tint multiple colors like Aqua, Green and Blue. As an incentive for a patient to try a custom tint, I always offer to order them an extra pair (sample contacts), so that they don’t have to give up one of their clear pairs. What a valuable service you’ve just given your patients! You haven’t changed the lens material, DK/L, power or size…just the color.
It takes very little
time to cover the cost of the system, and what a great return on
your investment … patient satisfaction, referrals and pure
profit!
As with any new product or equipment you bring to your office, marketing is important. IF YOU WANT YOUR PATIENTS TO KNOW SOMETHING, TELL THEM! As a doctor, your patients listen to you, and now you are able to offer a special in-house service. At my office, we pride ourselves on service and have often been compared as the Nordstrom of the eye industry” which is a fantastic complement. I encourage you to offer Softchrome® custom tints to grow your own contact lens practice.
