How much time does it take to tint a lens? Actual hands-on time is about 5 minutes. The "Recipes" booklet has clear instructions.

What roles do the Activator and the Neutralizing Solutions play? Activator Solution is a catalyst to bind the dye to the lens material. Neutralizing solution restores the lens to its proper pH.

What soft lens materials will the In-Office Tinting System tint? The system is successful in tinting any lens material that has HEMA present which includes most lenses. Tint toric, bi-focal, high plus & minus (Includes disposable and frequent replacement lenses).

How many lenses can I tint from a 30ml bottle of dye? 30ml contains 600 drops of dye. Taking an average for low, medium and high-water lenses, it is estimated that at least 300 lenses per 30ml bottle is achievable.

What do I charge for tinting? Fees may be higher or lower depending upon your location. The range per single lens is $15 (single vision) to $30 (bifocal). See our suggested Tinting Fee Schedule.

What about frequent-replacement lenses? We suggest no more than 3 to 4 pair be tinted at one time.  Place them in flat packs and provide the patient with the original manufacturer's packaging.  Charge an affordable fee of $5 per lens.

What is the shelf life of Softchrome dyes and solutions? From date of manufacture: Dyes - 5 years: Activator - 1 year/3 months; Neutralizer - 2 years/3 months. Expiration dates are clearly noted on each bottle's label.

Is it possible to remove the dye from a tinted lens? Tinted lens have been salvaged using 1 part liquid bleach & 3 parts distilled water. Every trace bleach must be removed by repeated rinsing with distilled water; if not, irritation to the eye will occur. Therefore, Softchrome does not represent that dye may be removed.

How resistant is the tinted lens to a rigorous cleaning regime? These lenses are as resistant to disinfecting systems as any other tinted lens. We recommend Alcon's Opti-Free Express, B&L's ReNu, Ciba's Solo Care, or Allergan's Complete.

What can I estimate to be our cost for tinting a pair of lenses? The average cost is less than $1.00 a pair.

How do you market custom tinting? Advertise these services in your YELLOW PAGES ad. Create a sample set of each color & place in clear-glass vials with screw tops. Display the photographic ad provided with your system in your reception-room area. Purchase the Demonstration Palette to show the effect of each tinted-lens color on the eye that most closely matches your patient's eye.

Can night & day lenses be tinted? No, night and day lenses cannot be tinted as they are worn all night and "tinted" lenses are for daily-wear only.
