Tinting Tips

Softchrome-tinted lenses are for daily wear use only. Though a lens may be pre-approved for extended wear, once tinted that lens may be worn solely for daily wear.

Prior to handling lenses, always wash hands thoroughly. Do not use lotions or hand sanitizers.

Use "soak" method for all dark tints.

Dark tints may leach excess dye. To control leaching, soak lenses immediately after tinting in hot Neutralizing Solution:

  1. Heat solution to boiling
  2. Remove from heat
  3. Drop lens into solution
  4. Allow to cool naturally
  5. Place in multi-purpose solution.

Make copies of the Patient's Record for Softchrome Tints. Record the recipe used for each tinted lens (Include lot numbers of all dyes, solutions and the processing date). Place the record in the patient's permanent file. Future duplication is is now easy.

Check the expiration date on all dyes and solutions frequently.

Keep your cylinders, mixing vessels and syringes clean and dry. To disinfect and remove stains, soak them in a solution of 25% household bleach and 75% distilled water. Rinse thoroughly and dry.

Do high-water torics tint off center? If so, try this method:

  1. Blot underside of lens first
  2. Place lens on cylinder's piston
  3. Blot top of lens center carefully
  4. Turn cylinder's base upside down and place piston with lens into hole in base
  5. Allow lens to air dry 3 to 5 minutes
  6. Now gently put piston into cylinder and lock base.

Avoid air bubbles by injecting dye slowly while holding cylinder at a slight angle (clear pupil and solid tints). Gently tap cylinder on a hard surface to settle dye.
